The Costa del Sol has decades of experience serving international visitors and remains one of the strongest starting points for accessible holidays in southern Spain.

Terrain and getting around

The seafront areas of the main resorts are generally easier than the roads running inland. Gradients, dropped kerbs and pavement widths change from one municipality and neighbourhood to another.

Accessibility is personal: distance, gradient, surface, heat and crowding affect travellers differently. Trace the complete route from the accommodation to the places that matter, including the return journey.

Choosing where to stay

Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas Costa, Marbella and Nerja offer very different terrain. Choose the individual resort before choosing a hotel.

Ask for the narrowest doorway, lift dimensions, bathroom transfer space, bed height and a step-free route to every hotel facility that will be used. Obtain important commitments in writing.

Airport transfers and local transport

Nearest airport: Málaga Airport. The coastal railway is useful between Málaga, the airport, Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola, but step-free access and lift availability should be checked for the stations needed.

Tell the transfer company whether the traveller can move into a vehicle seat or must remain in the wheelchair. Provide chair or scooter dimensions, combined weight, companion numbers and luggage details.

Mobility equipment hire

Mobility Abroad no longer accepts bookings or payments. We provide independent preparation information and links to selected providers so travellers can arrange equipment directly.

Confirm model, safe user weight, dimensions, charging, delivery, collection, damage cover and breakdown support. Match the equipment to the local terrain and the accommodation rather than selecting by price alone.

Practical local advice

Compare the exact hotel street, route to the promenade and airport-transfer vehicle rather than treating the whole coast as equally accessible.

Before booking Costa del Sol

  • Check the exact hotel street and surrounding gradients.
  • Request room, bathroom and lift measurements.
  • Arrange airline assistance and an appropriate airport transfer.
  • Confirm equipment delivery and emergency support in writing.
